Why my bank refuse to accept checks payable to me just a little older than 1 year?

The checks have no validity time limit on them. When I called my bank, they said it was their company rule to not accept checks older than 6 months (they claimed even that it was an industry wide standard practice). They stated that I could lose the money if I couldn't find the payers again and ask them to produce replacement checks. But my researches online indicate that some paying banks do honor checks for an indefinite time. Any advices? Thanks.
