Maths puzzle that I'm really confused about:?

My solution is more scientific than mathematical, but uming there are two white pebbles and one black pebble in the urn, the suitor could insist that the urn be placed out in the sun for an hour or so. The black pebble should have absorbed more heat and be easily distinguished from the white pebbles by its extra warmth.
