English citizen wanting to go to uni (american college) in America how?

I want to go to University/College in America, what type of visa do you need to bd able to go there and work + study? Also i was wondering whether anyone would advise a gap year before i go just in case i dont like it? And how do i break the news to my parents that when i move out it will be to another continent?
