Does any one know why this bone is coming back?

last december i had a operation to take a growing bone out of my For it was something to do with the cells that are ment to die off but kept growing and it is very painfull ... but i had a x-ray and it shows it is growing back again does any one know why it is ..... i have aslo been told its quite common to get it in your knees
